Poetry Multiple Choice

For me, the poetry multiple choice was okay. Somethings I understood well, others I didn't, and this was reflected in my scores. Simple, straight-forward questions, that did not ask me the meaning of-- or this is an example of--, I did well on (not really surprising, as they are the easier questions) but that also let me see the problem I have with poetry multiple choice questions. If the answers are laid out for me, obviously stated in the poetry, I have no problems but if I am asked to interpret something I usually end up wrong. When checking my answers against the answer key and reading the explanations, I find that usually my problem is that I am interpreting the poem differently than what I guess is expected, which also throws me off on the "bigger picture" or "main meaning" questions. Another problem I had (and I feel this is the bigger of the two I am mentioning) is when asked to identify different types of poetry, literary devices, or types of rhyming, I'm lost. Some of the answers were things I had never even heard of, which can make it very difficult to reach the right conclusion if you don't understand what choices you have. Overall I didn't struggle with one type of poem more than the others, but I do need to learn the different types of rhyming, poetry, and literary devices are so that I don't have the same problem again.

  1. I love how open and detailed your entries were for this assignment--I think that this class will address most of the concerns you've written about, though the secret to brushing up on vocab is really just read, read, read! =)
